Show Notes

This episode is a n instant classic, exploring not only the beauty of Australia but the inner journey of discovery and enlightenment with my good friend and fan of this podcast, Rod McCurdy. This episode summarizes exactly why Baker Street with Thom Pollard exists in the first place.

A recent sojourn to Australia unearthed a serendipitous encounter with Aboriginal musician George Dow, who masterfully demonstrated his didgeridoo. We discuss the hunter versus farmer hypothesis, first written about by author Thom Harmann. is a proposed explanation of the nature of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) first suggested by radio host Thom Hartmann in his book Attention Deficit Disorder: a Different Perception. This hypothesis proposes that ADHD represents a lack of adaptation of members of hunter-gatherer societies to their transformation into farming societies. Hartmann developed the idea first as a mental model after his own son was diagnosed with ADHD, stating, "It's not hard science, and was never intended to be." However, more recent molecular and clinical research has given support to a genetic theory of ADHD arising from evolutionary adaptation. Rod McCurdy invited me to visit Australia, and invite which I accepted gratefully. During the visit I met and fell in love with his family - wife Andrea, children Luca, Noah and Belle, and father-in-law Rolf Meyer. Rod, Rolf and myself went to Mount Kosciuszko National Park to climb the continent of Australia's highest mountain,

In a further interview, Rod discusses a difficult life situation that transformed his life, how this near awful experience is now viewed as a gift in his life. Rod also discusses his plans for a primitive reedship voyage to sail from Peru to Australia, a voyage ultimately devoted to studying the impact of plastic in our oceans, the use of modern technology and how he hopes to use the ship as a platform for understanding our oceans. Further, Rod speaks about the internal journey that a long expedition will require, and the type of crew he will be looking for to sail the ship during a voyage expected to last eight or more months on the ocean.
